I Found Out My Husband Has Been Paying His Ex-Wife's Rent

BY ANONYMOUS·

I found out my husband has been paying his ex-wife's rent for almost three years.

We have been married for five.

And no, they don't have children together.

I discovered it because we were applying for a mortgage. We had been saving for a bigger house, cutting back on vacations, eating out less, all that boring responsible adult stuff.

Our mortgage broker asked about a recurring monthly payment. My husband immediately said it was a family expense.

I didn't recognize the account.

Later that night, I asked him about it.

He told me the truth. Or at least part of it.

His ex-wife had been struggling financially after losing her job a few years ago. He started helping her temporarily. Then she found another job, but her income wasn't enough, so he continued.

$800 a month. For almost three years.

I did the math. More than $28,000.

Money that could have gone toward our house. Our future. The family we're trying to start.

I completely lost it.

He kept saying he understood why I was upset, but I needed to understand the circumstances.

Then he finally explained something he'd never told me.

Before their divorce, she'd gotten pregnant.

They'd both wanted the baby. But she lost it late in the pregnancy, and their marriage never really recovered. They blamed each other, stopped talking, and eventually separated.

He said she'd never fully recovered emotionally or financially, and helping her was the only thing he felt he could still do.

I didn't know what to say.

He had mentioned that their marriage ended after a difficult period, but never told me about the pregnancy.

For a few days, I actually felt guilty for being angry.

Then, at two in the morning, I made the mistake of looking at her Instagram. I scrolled through her posts, then tapped on her stories without thinking.

She's remarried.

Her new husband is an engineer. They have a nice apartment, take trips, go to restaurants. Last summer they spent two weeks in Italy.

I showed my husband.

He looked uncomfortable and said he knew she had remarried.

I asked whether her new husband knew about the money.

He said he didn't think so.

That's when I started laughing. Not because it was funny. Because I genuinely couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Four adults. Two marriages. And apparently my husband and I were secretly helping finance the other one.

I told him the payments had to stop.

He said he'd talk to her.

A week later, I asked if he'd done it.

He hadn't.

Two weeks later, still nothing.

Finally, I told him I would contact her myself if he didn't.

And that's when he said something I'll probably never forget.

"I made her a promise before I ever met you."

I asked what promise.

He wouldn't tell me.

Not couldn't. Wouldn't.

We're sleeping in separate rooms now.

Yesterday, his ex-wife sent me a message. Instagram had shown her exactly who'd been watching her stories at two in the morning.

Just one sentence.

"You don't know what he did, and I hope you never have to."

I haven't shown him the message yet.

For the first time since finding out about the money, I'm not even sure I want to know the rest.
