I asked my husband about another man

BY ANONYMOUS·

I asked my husband if he'd ever consider having a threesome.

He laughed.

"With another woman?"

"No," I said. "Another man."

He stopped laughing.

We've been married almost nine years. I'm 34, he's 37. No kids. A marriage I'd honestly call happy.

Our sex life is good. Not every night, obviously, but we still want each other. He makes me laugh, he's affectionate, and I genuinely can't imagine my life without him.

Which makes what I'm about to admit so much worse.

I've been fantasizing about his best friend for almost a year.

Let's call him Daniel.

Daniel has been in my husband's life since college. He was the best man at our wedding. He's practically family.

I never found him particularly attractive. Or maybe I did and just never allowed myself to think about it.

Something changed last winter.

My husband was away for work, and Daniel came over to help me fix something in the kitchen. We ended up sitting at the counter talking for almost three hours.

Nothing happened. He didn't touch me. Didn't make a move.

But at some point he asked me if I was happy.

Not in a casual way. He actually waited for an answer.

I said yes.

He smiled. "You sure? You seem different lately."

I don't know why that conversation stayed with me. But it did.

After that, I started noticing things. How he remembered little things I'd mentioned months earlier. How he held eye contact a second longer than necessary.

Maybe I imagined all of it.

Maybe I wanted to.

A few months later, after too much wine at a birthday party, I made a mistake.

I texted him:

"Sometimes I wonder what would've happened if I'd met you first."

He replied about twenty minutes later.

"Don't say things like that."

I apologized the next morning. He said it was fine. We never mentioned it again.

I deleted the conversation and told myself nothing had happened.

Technically, that's true.

But I know exactly what I wanted to happen.

Last Saturday, my husband and I were lying in bed, talking about things we'd never tried.

I don't even remember how it started. At some point, I asked about a threesome.

When I said I meant another man, he looked surprised but not angry.

"Seriously?"

"Maybe. Would that bother you?"

He thought for a while. Then he said something that caught me completely off guard.

"I don't know. Maybe not. If it was something we both wanted."

We spent the next hour talking about it. Whether we'd be jealous. What rules we'd need. Whether it would change us afterward.

He was much more open-minded than I expected.

At one point he asked, "Would you want a stranger or someone we know?"

I shrugged. "Someone we trust, I guess."

He shook his head. "No way. Imagine having to see that person at someone's birthday party afterward."

I laughed and agreed.

But secretly, I was disappointed.

Because I wasn't imagining some random man.

I was imagining Daniel.

And for the first time, I realized what I was actually doing.

I was trying to find a way to be with someone I wanted without having to call it cheating.

I felt disgusting. Not because I wanted something different in bed. But because my husband was genuinely trying to understand my fantasy, while I was hiding the most important part of it.

Two days later, he brought it up again.

We were making dinner.

"I've been thinking about what you said."

I tried to sound casual. "Oh yeah?"

"Yeah. I'm not completely against it."

I almost dropped the knife I was holding.

He smiled. "But I have one question."

"Okay."

"Would you still want to do it if it was with a guy you'd never met before?"

I didn't answer right away.

He noticed.

"Because that's the part I'm trying to understand," he said. "Is this about trying something new together, or is there someone you already want?"

I said it was just a fantasy.

He looked at me for a long time.

"Okay. Then tell me something."

I waited.

"It's not Daniel, is it?"
